Five materials (Bretex, Gore-Tex, Helox, Sympatex and Triplepoint) have been tested together with the material used in the Norwegian field uniform (a colton/polyester mix). This was done in order to determine the breathing abilities under conditions relevant in a coId climate. These conditions consisted of three different levels of convection and three different temperature ranges (-20°C, -I DaC and DaC). For comparison, we also tested the materials in room teperature. In addition, we examined the samples' breathing abilities due to varying relative humidity. This was done in room temperature. Our measurements revealed that the colton/polyester mix had the highest rate of water vapour transfer through the sample. This material is, however, less waterproofthan the other textiles. When considering the five other samples, Gore-Tex, Sympatex and Triplepoint had the best results. Helox's water vapour transfer rates were somewhat lower than the values of the three textiles mentioned above.
